The “Keon” model features a small 3.5-inch screen, 1 GHz processor and 4 GB storage, making it barely comparable to a cheap Android phone in the USA market.

The Peak, on the other hand, is a better handset with decent features like a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and a higher quality 4.3-inch qHD display. It also has an 8-megapixel rear facing camera and a 2-megapixel camera in the front. The phone comes with 4 GB of storage.

This launch is very important from the perspective of budget smartphones market as Firefox OS is a browser-based open source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers and is designed to leverage cloud computing and HTML 5 ecosystem, which will enable better performance from mobile phones with lesser hardware requirement.

“This week we are announcing our new Firefox OS developer preview phones because we believe that developers will help bring the power of the web to mobile,” Mozilla said in its official blog.

Mozilla is targeting the lower end of Android market rather than taking on the Windows Phone, iOS or high end Android devices. Its phones are likely to be very cheap and should be able to create a mark in the feature phone market which still dominates most of the developing markets like India.

So far, the only official news we have about WP 7.8 is it will include a more flexible live tile homescreen like WP 8 devices. Other WP 8 features will not migrate eo WP 7x devices because of hardware limitations. The phones simply cannot run WP 8 without things like dual core processors.

WP 7.8 could also include bluetooth file transfer ability, lock screen wallpapers and new accent colors, according to the WMPower User blog. Additionally, for Nokia phones, there could also be SMS drafts and a keep WiFi active mode when the phone is asleep.

Perhaps two years is as long as any device can be relevant in the fast changing mobile world, and as noted above, it is often up to the mobile carrier as to the timing and possibility of software updates. It’s a complicated system no doubt, but Microsoft has to be thinking long term here, and in two more years, WP 8 may indeed have a more conspicuous place in buyers’ minds.

Nokia’s Lumia 920, its flagship WP 8 device is now out in the wild, and so far it seems to be selling at a good clip. It has sold out many initial shipments to retail stores, and the fact it has the same look as the Windows 8 system on laptops and tablets should help raise its profile. That is something the WP 7 system didn’t have, although it theoretically could have if the hardware limits were not in place.

OS X Mountain Lion Downloaded 3 Million Times in Four Days

“Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said in a statement.

The announcement squares with Friday data from Chitika, which found that Mountain Lion was already on 3.2 percent of all Macs. According to the mobile ad firm, more than 45 percent of Mac users are still using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, about 13.56 percent are running Mac OS X 10.5, while 2.75 percent are fighting the good fight on Mac OS X 10.4.

Mountain Lion is available for $19.99 in the Mac App Store; anyone currently on 10.6.6 and up is eligible for an upgrade. Those who bought a Mac on June 11 or after can get a free Mountain Lion upgrade.

The revamped OS includes more than 200 new features, from iCloud integration to a new silent updating option known as Power Nap, as well as 1,700 new APIs. On the iCloud front, Mountain Lion will make it easier for users to sync documents between Macs and iOS devices.

Also, Apple’s popular iMessage service has displaced the venerable iChat on Mountain Lion. The result is a cross-platform service that lets users on Macs, iPhones, and iPads chat with each other.
