(TS) – Dell has unveiled a new HDD-based backup device for small and medium businesses called the PowerVault DL2100. The device can be fitted with up to four 500GB HDDs in RAID 5 configuration.

The new backup device is an integrated out of the box solution for backing up critical data and recovering that data in the event of loss. Dell claims that the backup system can reduce costs compared to tape drives by up to 50%.
The machine is powered by Symantec Backup Exec software in several different forms. The backup device comes in economy and performance versions. The Economy version uses a single Intel Xeon E5520 CPU while the performance version gets two of the same parts. The economy version runs 6GB of RAM with the performance version getting 24GB of RAM.

The Dell PowerVault DL2100 is available now from Dell starting near $8,600 for the standard model and $11,500 to add deduplication features.
