(TS) – Not all Apple Mac systems and laptops have optical disk drives, and Apple isn’t really in the business of selling adjoining products, which means that other IT players can fill in the void. Pioneer is taking advantage of this and is releasing the BDR-XU02JM, a Blu-ray drive with a stand.
Its sized 133x133x12 mm (stand excluded) and weighs 245 grams. It has a silver-coloured metal enclosure, which should appeal to Ultrabook and MacBook owners.
The BDR-XU02JM is capable of writing both single and double-layer BD-R discs at speeds of up to 6x. Triple and quadruple layer discs are also compatible, at a maximum speed of 4x. The BD-R (LtH) writing speed is 6x and single, double and triple-layer BD-RE discs can be created at 2x speeds. Naturally, DVDs and CDs are also supported, at speeds of respectively 8x and 24x. The device has a 4 MB buffer and connects through USB 2.0, which takes care of both power and data.
Pioneer will release its new BDR-XU02JM on the Japanese market later this month, with a worldwide release following shortly after. Prices are still up in the air.
